For example, the amount of stainless steel scrap currently being used reduces the energy required for stainless steel manufacture by around one-third over using 100% virgin materials. This, in turn, lessens the environmental impact of nickel-containing stainless steels by reducing both the need for virgin materials and the energy that their production uses. Most nickel-containing materials are fully recyclable at the end of the product’s useful life indeed their high value encourages recycling. This is why austenitic alloys are preferred for high-temperature applications and where fire resistance is needed. Nickel also stabilises the protective oxide film and reduces spalling during thermal cycling. These alloys are also much less prone to forming damaging brittle phases when exposed to temperatures in excess of 300oC. In contrast, the common austenitic stainless steels retain good toughness even at liquid helium temperatures (-270oC), which is why grades such as Type 304 are widely used for cryogenic applications.Īdding nickel gives the austenitic alloys of stainless steel significantly greater high-temperature strength than other alloys, particularly the ability to resist the tendency to move slowly or deform permanently under mechanical stresses, known as creep. Most stainless steels have good toughness at room temperature, however, as temperature decreases the ferritic structure becomes progressively more brittle, making ferritic stainless steels unsuitable for use at cryogenic temperatures. Toughness - the ability of a material to absorb energy without breaking - is essential in many engineering applications. They are readily weldable in both thick and thin sections. Unlike ferritic alloys, they are not prone to brittleness as a result of high-temperature grain growth and the welds have excellent bend and impact properties. In general, nickel austenitic alloys are better for welding than other alloys, with Types 304 and 316 being the most widely-fabricated stainless steels in the world. Many pieces of stainless steel equipment are fabricated by welding. Their excellent formability has led to 300-series austenitic alloys being widely used for items such as kitchen sinks and cooking pots. Unlike low-nickel, high-manganese alloys, these alloys are not prone to delayed cold cracking. A slightly higher nickel content further increases the stability of the austenite and reduces the work-hardening tendency, increasing suitability for deep drawing. The common 18% chromium/ 8% nickel Type 304 in particular shows good stretch-forming characteristics. The austenitic structure provides stainless steels with good ductility and formability.

![]() ![]() Considering how varied and eventful the history of Hammerfell is, it would be no wonder if Bethesda decided to make the province the main setting of The Elder Scrolls 6. As a testament to the Redguard's strength, the Aldmeri Dominion were completely pushed out of Hammerfell, leaving the Forebears and Crowns bound by shared victory and a renewed sense of alliance. Due to this betrayal, Hammerfell famously left the Empire and was forced to continue war against the Thalmor, leading to a ravaging of the southern territories mentioned in the Concordat. Known as the White-Gold Concordat, the terms of peace between the two parties saw the Empire attempt to cede huge portions of southern Hammerfell to the invaders, much to the warranted objection of the Redguard. As the combined but exhausted Tamrielic forces of the Empire eventually overwhelmed the Thalmor, negotiations for peace began. Redguard factions then came under attack, and a reconciliation between the Forebears and Crowns finally occurred, as they began aiding each other in the face of a cataclysmic threat. With Hammerfell still being a part of the Empire, it faced heavy initial attacks that saw Imperial forces retreat right through the province, starting in the year 171. The Great War was waged by Elven supremacists known as the Thalmor, who operated under the wider moniker of the Aldmeri Dominion, against the Tamrielic Empire. Large portions of Tamriel in the Fourth Era were dominated by the events of the Great War, with Hammerfell being one of the main stages of battle. This power vacuum additionally led to the establishment of a more moderate faction in Hammerfell known as the Lhotunic, who were predictably despised by Crowns and Forebears alike. ![]() After human agents of the Daedric Prince Molag Bal seized control of the White Gold Tower, the High Elves of the Summerset Isles decided that the young race of humans were unfit to rule Tamriel and could bring great calamity. As a result, a plethora of city-states were effectively wiped out, leading the Crowns and Forebears to once again control large swathes of Hammerfell territory. The Aldmeri Dominion is one of the three playable factions in The Elder Scrolls Online, the others being the Daggerfall Covenant and Ebonheart Pact. Many other kingdoms and factions would lay siege to Hammerfell following this, with the resultant chaos mysteriously rectifying itself in a phenomenon known as the Miracle of Peace, in which the involved factions are thought to have destroyed each other. With a kind of widespread land-grab now occurring within Hammerfell, the kingdoms of Sentinel and Daggerfall began warring with each other over ownership of Hammerfell's Betony Island. For example, the Nords famously captured the city of Dragonstar in the year 396 of the Third Era, with the strategic city remaining half under Nordic rule well into the Fourth Era. This internal unease within the province allowed for neighboring forces to seriously impose themselves upon Hammerfell, leading to the concession of important land to other provinces. With tensions between the Forebears and Crowns reaching an understandable high, neither would come to the aid of the other throughout a spate of assaults on Redguard land. So.The level of barbarity and betrayal that was showcased in the civil war would linger significantly throughout Hammerfell's history in the Third Era. What does that mean for Tamriel's future, then? It stands to reason that The Elder Scrolls VI might revolve around just that.Ĭould we maybe be seeing Summerset Isles next? And what does the Stormcloak Conflict say for Skyrim's future? Whether it wins it's independence or not, it means a completely different Skyrim in the next installment, one either free from Imperial (and Aldmeri) rule thanks to the death in combat of General Tullius, and no longer part of the Empire, or one that's had it's rebellion crushed and the Age of Aggression ended when the Dragonborn slew Ulfric Stormcloak.Įven Tullius and the Imperials knew that they couldn't defeat the Aldmeri Dominion if they kept all the infighting up, and everyone in the Empire was basically planning to overthrow the Aldmeris once they were strong enough, having been kind of fucked after that whole Oblivion Crisis thing. I really would have liked to defeat the Aldmeri Dominion in Skyrim, but you're never given the chance, even though the secondary plot of the game revolves around an ongoing war between the Nords of Skyrim and their allies, and the Imperials, working at the hands of the Aldmeri Dominion. After five minutes it has become super fruity. Actually, this nose is getting better by the minute, so I will leave it for a while. A small amount of raisins and oak, as well as some tobacco. After breathing it offers caramel and roasted nuts. Dandelions and malt with a hint of smoke in the background. I get than rancid edge again, although that sounds a lot worse than it really is. The nose offers the typical Jura characteristics immediately. The label states that this is a Truly Magical Whisky. But on the other hand, I read somewhere that it was introduced in 2007 to replace the 21 Year Old. But for those hedonistic times, go for Diurach's Own.Īccording to some, this Jura 18 Year Old is no longer being manufactured. If you're feeling more thoughtful, then reach for the Original. Nevertheless, having now reviewed all 4 of the core range, I overall rate the Diurach's Own the highest, for the simple joy of it. My point is: if your bottle is open for a long time (presumably it was at Duty Free), then it is possible this might eventually tone down to hay, i.e. I recall finding the Diurach's Own rather like "hay and butter" (which I now find in the Superstition), whereas I thought the Original had more sweet complexity. ![]() Sweet and smooth, this one lends itself to dessert.Īside from simplicity, my other reservation is that a couple years ago I was offered a sample of this in a Duty Free shop, and at that time I was less impressed with the 16 than with the 10. You might even call this one "uninteresting" if you're looking for complexity (the main reason for a lower score). Their palates both evoke caramel (very smooth and somewhat sweet) but the Original's is more black pepper and apricot, whereas Diurach's Own offers more straightforward honey and a touch of vanilla. Their aromas are similar, except the Original has more salt & soil, whereas the Diurach's Own has honey & grass. This warrants comparison with the 10yo/Original, the other non-peated sibling. Joined softly by salty vanilla, and fades to grapefruit pith. Palate: Enters sweet with honey., then a wave of gingery oil (with the honey) then becoming smoother and vanilla creamy- still with ample honey.įinish: Rather like the palate, with honey lingering gingerly. With more time, it develops elements of sweet grass and faint nectarine (citric peach). Nose#2: Toning down to that idiosyncratic "Jura aroma" I described in the other reviews (dried-apricot/beer/cheese), except that it is now richly enhanced with honey butter. Nose#1: Thick and sweet on first pour- caramel fudge as it opens. Now onto the 4th and final, the 16yo, which has the official title of "Diurach's Own" to signify that it is the drink-of-choice among the inhabitants of Jura. I earlier reviewed the other 3 of Jura's range (10yo/Original, Superstition, & Prophecy). Good stuff indeed nice light spirit, good balance between youth and age, lovely With water honey, really prominent mocha then it’s gone. With water milk chocolate first, then spicy fruit toast, with honey and toffee interminglingįinish: gentle restrained and short, toffee lasts from the pallet and some nutty tang. Pallet: beautiful smooth luscious body, immediately as you swallow there is some smoke or toasty-ness, milk chocolate, honey, toffee, dried fruits are still kind of there in the background I would say raisin and even a touch of sherry. With water bigger, slightly buttery even, other than that, all the aromas are still there, bread dough is more pronounced and has gone a little tequila-ery, touch of floral too. ![]() Nose: a little closed you really have to go digging for this nose and honey, rich fruit almost fruit cake, bread dough (seemingly the Jura signature) and some toffee. In Urumqi, a city in Xinjiang's east populated mostly by the Han, Beijing Standard Time suffices. Among Han Chinese, Justin Jacobs, a Xinjiang expert at American University, told me, use of Beijing Standard Time is universal: “that there’s another clock is not even something the Han think about.” But much of the Uighur population prefers to use their own time. But in Xinjiang, the question of time divides the region’s population. And this decision to unify the whole country under one time zone was hardly unprecedented: newly-independent India, for example, had instituted a similar policy just two years before.įor most people in China, the single time-zone is at most a mild inconvenience, a scheduling quirk that simply requires a little adjustment. Given the state of the nation in those days, Mao’s reasoning was legitimate: Just two decades before, China was a fragmented country, with large swathes (such as Xinjiang) beyond the de facto control of the central government. ![]() But in 1949, as the Communist Party consolidated control of the country, Chairman Mao Zedong decreed that all of China would henceforth be on Beijing time for the purposes of national unity. In 1912, the year after the collapse of the Qing Dynasty, the newly empowered Republic of China established five different time zones in the country, ranging from five and a half to eight and a half hours past Greenwich Mean Time. ![]() We’re Learning the Wrong Lessons From the World’s Happiest Countries Joe PinskerĬhina hasn't always had one time zone. Maybe so, but the single time zone does present odd sights: In the summer, for instance, it isn’t uncommon in Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital, to see people enjoying a beautiful sunset. reduce its time zones from four to two, cited China as an example of why such a change would be less problematic than people would expect. The reason for this confusion is simple: China, a country that is of roughly similar size to the continental United States, has one time zone: Beijing Standard Time. But if your friend is a Uighur, the largest ethnic minority group in Xinjiang, he might be referring to “local time,” which is two hours behind. If your friend is of China's majority Han ethnicity, you can assume that by 3 o'clock he's referring to Beijing Standard Time. Sounds pretty straight forward, right? Not in Xinjiang. Your friend sends you a text message and tells you to meet him at 3 pm. Imagine that you've found yourself in Kashgar, the western-most city in Xinjiang, China’s western-most region.
